Inhaling Life: The Crucial Role of Indoor Air Quality
Every day, as we breathe, we engage in an intimate exchange with our environment. This invisible transaction fuels our bodies, sustains life, and shapes our well-being.
Consider the daily intake for an average adult:
- Water: 1 to 2 litres on average
- Food: 1.5 to 3 kg of nourishment.
- Air: 15,000 to 20,000 litres! with approximately 90% inhaled indoors
Even though we can choose what to eat (e.g. we can choose to eat organic or to simply cut on foods we believe aren’t good for us) or choose the quality of water we drink (e.g. filtered water), we can hardly choose what air we will breathe today!
These seemingly mundane quantities hold immense significance.
Why? Because they underscore the profound impact of indoor air quality (IAQ) on our lives.
In 2020, indoor air pollution contributed to approximately 3.2 million deaths globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and over 2 million DALYs (disability-adjusted life years) are lost in the EU due to poor indoor air quality and its effects, which include but are not limited to cardiovascular diseases, lung cancers, asthma, respiratory tract infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and acute intoxication.
Why does indoor air pollution persist? Unlike ambient air, it lacks the same stringent regulations. Yet, the air in our homes, workplaces, and schools are on average to 2-5 times more polluted than outside!
A Beacon of Change
Recognising the urgency of this issue, the International Indoor Air Quality Institute was established.
Our mission? To champion healthier indoor air for all. By promoting awareness, advocating for better practices, and driving innovation, we can collectively transform our indoor environments.
Because everyone deserves to breathe air that nurtures, rather than harms—a breath that sustains life, creativity, and well-being.

Why IAQ matters
- Human Comfort: The air we breathe directly influences our comfort. Clean, fresh air enhances our daily experiences, while poor IAQ can lead to discomfort and restlessness.
- Health: Our respiratory system is intricately linked to the quality of the air we inhale. Airborne pollutants, such as particulates and gases, can trigger respiratory illnesses, exacerbate asthma, and even contribute to more severe conditions like heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and possibly dementia.
- Productivity: Picture a workspace suffused with clean, oxygen-rich air. Productivity soars, creativity blossoms, and focus sharpens. Conversely, stagnant or polluted indoor air stifles our potential.
- Well-Being: Beyond physical health, IAQ profoundly impacts our overall well-being. A serene, toxin-free environment fosters mental clarity, emotional balance, and a sense of tranquillity.
